Airtel Expected to Launch 4G Services by September in Delhi, Mumbai to Follow Soon

Bharti Airtel is expected to launch 4G (Fourth Generation) services in Delhi i.e. one of the lucrative data market in the country.

Company already offer 4G services in some cities such as Kolkata, Pune, Chandigarh and Bangalore has connected in Chinese equipment maker Huawei to build and operate 4G network in Delhi. An official company source said, “We are planning to launch 4G services in Delhi by September and has selected Huawei for the network”.

Recently the company reduced 4G data tariffs by up to 31% with the aim to boost up data usage and increase adoption for its 4G service for improving revenues. Airtel had won spectrum- Broadband Wireless Access (BWA)- in four telecom service areas of Maharashtra, Punjab, Karnataka and Kolkata for high speed broadband service in the year 2010, paying Rs 3,314.36 crore for it.


Last year, Bharti Airtel acquired 49% stake in US telecom major Qualcomm Inc’s Indian 4G joint venture Wireless Business Services (WBS), gave it an opportunity to enter into the circles of Delhi, Mumbai, Haryana and Kerala.

To win the BWA license for the four circles, Qualcomm had fork out Rs. 4,192 crore and in the same auction, Reliance Jio Infocomm won 20 Mhz slot for pan- India BWA spectrum for Rs. 12,847.71, but still the company is yet to roll out services.

Currently, Bharti Airtel holds 51% stake in WBS and also plan to completely acquire it by end of the next year. Once service is launched in Delhi successfully, it will launch in Mumbai and the company is in talk with the players such as ZTE and Huawei for network service.

4G Mobile Internet Technology provides download speeds of around 100 Mbps on the move and can go up to 1 Gbps at a fixed location.
